As the raw water is being directly lifted from the river course, this
method entails substantial water loss and requires pumping through high
head. Also since the rivers flow through developed areas of Nashik city,
there is considerable contamination of river water.
To overcome the above problems,
NMC has decided to lift the water directly from Gangapur Dam through
close conduit. A project titled "Augmentation to NMC water supply
with Change of Source(Phase-I)" Costing Rs. 126.33 Crores,
was prepared. It was technically scrutinized by MJP and administratively
approved by GOM in January 1998. Major portion of the project has now
been completed.
The water requirement during Kumbhamela
period will be increased by about 50 mId. This increased water supply
will be required mainly in panchavati area . Therefore work of 22 mId
WTP at Panchavati will be taken in hand which will meet water requirement
for Kumbhamela. The pumping machinery at Panchavati WTP, ESR at Tapovan
for Sadhu Camp and distribution system for Sadhu camp etc. are other
main works which have been included in Kumbhamela Development plan.
b) Works Included in this DPR.
(i) Cross Connection to Panchavati
Rising Mains from Nashik Pumping Station:(Godavari River Crossing)
As per the sanctioned water supply
scheme the raw water is being directly conveyed from Gangapur Dam through
close conduit. The raw water will be tapped from Bara Bungla (Nashik
WTP) for Panchavati WTP. The existing Nashik and Panchavati raw water
rising mains will be crossed connected near Nashik pumping station,
so that there is no need to lay separate transmission main from Nashik
WTP to Panchavati WTP. The 1321 mm OD M.S. pipe will be laid in the
Godavari River to cross connect existing rising mains on both sides
of Panchavati and Nashik.
(ii) Additional
WTP at Panchavati
The existing capacity of treatment
plant is 20 mId, 20 mId, and 9 mId. (Total 49 mId). The 22 mId capacity
treatment plant is proposed in the water supply scheme (Phase-I) at
the existing site. It includes the pure water sump and pump house. The
pure water pumping machinery, is proposed to feed the existing and proposed
reservoir at Tapovan site.

(iii)
Repair and Maintenance of Existing WTPs
Existing WTPs are in
operation for more than 10 years and thus repair of mechanical
parts and painting to the structure is required. Adequate provision
has been proposed for these works.

(iv)Adequate Water Supply for Sadhu Camp
In order to have 24 hours water
supply to Sadhu Camp and to Pilgrims, it is necessary to have
independent reservoir at lunge site. It is proposed to construct 2.225
ml additional reservoir at Lunge. The land for construction of reservoir,
is available with NMC. To feed the reservoir the rising main of 2.1
km is also proposed. It is expected that around 2 lakhs Sadhu's will
stay at least for a period of 1 month and 20 laklis to 25 Iakhs pilgrims
will visit during the holy bath days. For this purpose following arrangements
are proposed.
A) Internal distribution system in CI, PVC and GI pipes of adequate size. B) Sintex Tanks of 5,000 litres capacity at various locations. C) Stand post on various routes in the Panchavati area.
